The Gwendal Limited Edition BNT 195mm Inline Skate Boot pairs a lightweight carbon fiber base with a close-fitting racing design. Its matte white and shiny gold finish, thin neoprene padding, and responsive feel make this inline speed skate boot a focused choice for experienced skaters and professional racers.

Designed by Gwendal Le Pivert

Seven-time world champion Gwendal Le Pivert, a member of the French National Team and Team Bont Europe, designed this limited-edition boot. A matte white Durolite upper with shiny gold accents gives the BNT's clean, classical lines a distinctive finish. BNT embroidery on the lace cover, GLP 7 branding on the side, and Bont's circle logo at the rear complete the design.

Lightweight carbon fiber construction

The 100% carbon fiber base uses Bont's epoxy thermoset resin for a fully heat-moldable base. Its matte finish is lighter than the usual gloss finish. With no bumpers, thermoplastic, or zippers, the construction keeps weight low for a responsive racing feel. The thermo-moldable EVA innersole allows further fit adjustment.

A close-fitting racing boot

A tighter-than-normal heel holds the foot firmly for a feel as close to custom as possible. The thin, firm 2 mm neoprene padding is a closed-cell foam that does not absorb water. This responsive fit is designed for professional racers and experienced inline speed skaters who prefer direct feedback over a heavily padded boot.

Durolite, usually reserved for the Bont Vaypor, covers the upper. The Suede-L liner feels comfortable with or without socks.

Secure lacing and tongue ventilation

Tongue vents help keep the feet cool, and Velcro holds the tongue in position. The tongue padding helps prevent lace bite. Waxed laces have very little stretch, helping maintain consistent tension.

195mm mounting and durable hardware

The boot has a 195mm mount separation and a 12 mm pitch. Aluminum mounting blocks contain a hardened steel nut, and the mounting screws use Loctite to help prevent loosening during a race. Bont reports that it has never received a skate returned because of mounting block issues.

Ever wondered what Carbon Fiber is? For instance, is it Carbon Fiber or Carbon Fibre? To clarify, Fibre and Fiber have the same meaning. Fibre is the British English spelling, while Fiber is the US English spelling.

Carbon Fiber is a revolutionary material. It is as strong as steel with a fraction of the weight.

Carbon Fiber consists of mainly bonded carbon atoms. For example, the fibers’ long axis consists of particles that have been bonded together and aligned. Following this, a yarn is created by twisting several thousand of the threads together. Finally, a piece of fabric is woven from the yarn.

Here at Bont, we have been producing carbon-based boots since 1989. Above all and most importantly, we source our carbon exclusively from the world’s number one carbon manufacturer, Toray of Japan.

A cheaper form of carbon. 12K Plain carbon is not as strong as 3k Plain carbon, which results in the price being around 20% cheaper.

 

INDUSTRY MISREPRESENTATION

In the old days, if you purchased a plastic or nylon based shoe, you knew what you were getting. However, nowadays, with all of the expensive modern materials, it is getting harder to identify what is in your product. As a result, you may not be getting what you thought you purchased.

Here are some handy tips on different ways manufacturers use materials. That is to say, use these points for consideration in your next purchase.


One layer of carbon
Often, manufacturers misrepresent carbon shoes. For example, the shoe base can be an injection-molded plastic, or nylon, or fiberglass base and usually covered with a single layer of carbon fiber. Unfortunately, when you buy a shoe, and you see that it has a carbon base, the chances are that only the outer layer is carbon.

Unidirectional carbon
A variety of shoes are marketed as Unidirectional carbon. However, many of these shoes use injection molded carbon in the plastic and call this Unidirectional Carbon. Consequently, we feel this is a misuse of the terminology. For example, here at Bont, Unidirectional Carbon means carbon fiber, where all of the strands travel in the same direction.

Silver fiberglass
Many shoes use a plastic injection molded base with some carbon particles in it. Also, these shoes typically have a single layer of silver fiberglass for the outer layer. As such, manufacturers advertise ‘carbon fiber’ for these shoes. They are allowed to use this term as there is carbon dust in the plastic mold under the outer fiberglass layer. However, the fiberglass woven material on the outside is not carbon. Above all, remember Carbon Fiber is always black.

100% composite
What is 100% composite? This term almost covers anything. Therefore, the question you need to ask when considering a composite boot is, A composite of what? In short, a composite boot is usually a nylon fiberglass composite.

Monocoque
A Monocoque shoe is where the carbon is directly laminated onto the liner. Unfortunately, some companies are calling a carbon shell with an integrated heel cup a Monocoque shoe; however, it isn’t.

In summary, be aware of companies jumping on the bandwagon of carbon technology and using keywords to promote their product. Above all, do your research and be mindful of what you are purchasing. We hope this helps your decision in your carbon boot purchase.

高品質な製品をよりよい形でお届けするため、製造工程の開発と改良を続けています。例えば、カーボンの硬化に使っていた一般的な真空ボックスは、別の方法に置き換えました。現在は、加圧ラッピングなどの方法を採用しています。従来の真空成形では1気圧ですが、加圧ラッピングでは4気圧をかけることができます。

テクノロジー：一体成形

Bontでは、上位モデルのスケートを「One-Piece Construction（一体成形）」と呼ぶ製法で製造しています。一般的な製法に比べて高度な技術と多くの時間を必要とし、コストも大幅に高くなりますが、性能面でBontが市場をリードする理由の一つです。

あらかじめつくったベースにライナーと外装材を接着したブーツを、ツーピース構造のブーツと呼びます。そのステッチの多くは装飾目的で、構造上の役割はありません。ブーツを組み立てる前に縫製するため、見た目を重視してステッチを施すことができます。

技術：樹脂の開発

Bontは45年以上にわたり、樹脂の開発に取り組んできました。非常に高い剛性を持ちながら、低温で成形できる樹脂を独自に配合しています。また、当社の製造では短い硬化時間も重要です。ブーツメーカーの中で、樹脂を自社開発している企業はごくわずかです。

当社の樹脂は、業界最低水準のわずか60°C（140°F）で軟化します。必要に応じて何度でも再加熱できるため、ブーツを温めて足の形に合わせやすいのが特長です。加熱後は形を整え、冷えて固まるまで待つことで、自分の足に合った形状を作れます。

エポキシ（ポリエポキシド）は、触媒や硬化剤と混ぜると硬化する、熱硬化性のエポキシドポリマーです。当社は、温度と樹脂・硬化剤の組み合わせによって、硬化と呼ばれる重合反応を制御しています。この工程には数分から数時間かかります。

樹脂に加える硬化剤の量は、気温や湿度によって大きく変わります。そのため、当社ではコンピューター制御で樹脂と硬化剤を混合しています。気温と湿度を測定してから、配合した樹脂を供給する仕組みです。

多くのメーカーは、カーボンファイバーにあらかじめ樹脂を含浸させる、プリプレグと呼ばれる方法を採用しています。

プリプレグでは、ほとんどの場合、カーボンファイバーのメーカーが樹脂を選びます。いわば、さまざまな用途に同じ仕様を使う方式です。ブーツメーカー側では、現代のブーツに求められる熱成形性に合わせて樹脂を調整できません。そのため、多くの他社製ブーツでは、熱成形に高い温度が必要です。それでも成形できる範囲が限られることがあります。

Bontのアッパーは、ブーツ上部を覆う軽量なパーツです。ブーツに接着し、縫い付けて固定します。通気性を確保するため、アッパーとライナーを貫く穴を手作業で開けます。バックルとストラップを取り付け、足を下方向と後ろ方向へ引き寄せて固定できるようにします。最後に余分な接着剤を取り除けば、スケートを履く準備が整います。完成品として出荷するには、独立した16段階の品質検査に合格しなければなりません。こうして、市場で最高の重量当たりの強度を備えた製品をお届けしています。
